Tom's
Gear Philosophy
There are all kinds of Austin recording studios, from the behemoths that can set you back a
few week’s pay for an 8 hour block, to the ones that are
set up in a corner of somebody’s spare bedroom. Alta
Vista Recording Studio tries to marry the amenities, comfort
and sound of the big guys to the value and the laid-back
vibe of the latter. One of the ways we do that is to be
very cagey about equipment purchases. For example, one
of our clients, who is a singer in one of the most
popular bands in town, told us that he prefers the sound
we get with one of our M-Audio Sputnik mics to that of a
very expensive mic that he used in a very expensive
recording studio in Austin. It is possible for a
studio to provide a top shelf sound at a very attractive
rate if utilitarianism trumps pretension. On the other
hand, there are times when world-class gear such as our
8 channels of Millennia Media preamps or our Audix
channel strips are the best idea.
